The Nehru Planetarium Delhi is located on Teen Murti Marg (Road) and is a division of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library.
It is centrally located for which it is easily accessible by local transport and metro as well. The nearest metro station to Nehru planetarium is Central Secretariat.
The establishment has made the astronomical learning a pleasant experience for students. It also has grown into a Center for scientific study of astronomy and for meeting of scientists and scholars for discussions and lectures, arranged periodically on various stellar and Astronomical events. The programmes are aimed at inspiring students. These include Science quiz contests, Astro-painting, Science elocution, Astro-poetry and Astro-quiz competitions. Special arrangements are made to watch, study and photograph Solar & Lunar eclipses, and many such other events.
- The Nehru Planetarium Delhi has emerged with the objective of promoting scientific temper through the means of edutainment which promotes entertainment along with education. Though the Planetarium came into existence on 6th February 1984 to bring alive the dream of Pundit Nehru who had a keen interest in enhancing the knowledge of people about the World they live in and the amazing Solar System and to advertise the study of astronomy.
- This Planetarium provides interactive programs and showcases innovative ideas for people from all walks of life especially for budding and amateur astronomers.
- As you enter the Nehru Planetarium, you are welcomed with an array of photographs and pictures on space education and the astronomers’ contribution to the cosmic society. Along with these pictures, event based and curriculum based exhibitions and activities are also organized frequently by the authorities. A huge model of the Soyuz T-10 Space Module can be seen on display which lifted India’s First Cosmonaut, Rakesh Sharma, along with other two Russian cosmonauts to space and back to earth. Along with this model, the cosmonaut’s Space Suit and a write-up on their Mission and journey are also on display. The Planetarium also homes a massive sky theatre with a seating capacity of 270 people and screens various films about the Solar System and Planets ranging from the evolution of stars, their life cycle and how planets came into existence and many other cosmic attributes.
The Planetarium has been constantly improvising and innovating programmes for its visitors. The strength of planetarium lies in its live interactive and dynamic programs for visitors, students and amateur astronomers. Nehru Planetarium Delhi is usually lively and active with various programs for school and college students and for amateur astronomers. Throughout the year, there are many workshops or observing activities. There are also Astronomy Quiz and Art competitions in the months of February and August.
The planetarium in Delhi infrastructure are well upgraded for different projection equipment’s in it and they are advanced with the upgradation process being undertaken as a turn key project by the National Council of Science Museums, Kolkata.
