NEW DELHI: Minor Rams Car into Auto, 1 Dead

An auto rickshaw driver was killed after a car crashed into his three-wheeler on Kasturba Gandhi Marg in New Delhi on Thursday morning in yet another incident of a minor causing motor accident. The incident took place at about 6 am, on Thursday, at a bend between KG Marg and Tolstoy Marg.

A passerby informed the police about the accident.

  • The police said the 17-year-old boy, who was accompanied by his two friends, was driving a Maruti Ciaz car. They had allegedly jumped the traffic signal when the accident took place. Police said the friends had come to Connaught Place for a drive.
  • The impact of the collision was such that the auto-rickshaw driver was flung several metres in the air because of the collision and thrown a few metres away from the site of the crash. The driver victim, Shiv Shankar Mahato, 66, a resident of Mata Sundri Road, died on the spot. The teenagers also sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital.

The car was registered in the name of the boy’s uncle, who is a businessman in Northeast Delhi. Also, he is likely to be booked for giving his car keys to a minor.

Mr. Mehto had come to Delhi 20 years ago with his son Kamleshwar. “He worked very hard to feed me and my sister. The minor’s joy ride took my father away,” said an inconsolable Kamleshwar.
