After the Diwali celebrations and the vehicles which are currently running on the roads of Delhi are the main reason behind the poor quality of air in Delhi NCR which is rising rapidly and is getting worse day by day which can cause many breathing problems to everyone such as Asthma. The city government has decided to bring back the odd-even vehicle rationing scheme to limit the number of cars on the roads to control the air pollution. On Thursday, the average air quality index was found “poor” even most of the areas in the capital proofed to be “very poor” and some suffered “critical” air pollution levels.
A letter has been written to Delhi Transport Minister, Kailash Ghalot who directed the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) to take the necessary steps for the implementation of the odd-even scheme. Under this scheme, private vehicles with odd enrollment will only be allowed to run on roads on the odd dates and those who are registered with even numbers will run their vehicles only on even dates and the timing will be from 8am to 8pm.
In the past two rounds of odd-even scheme in Delhi, vehicles on weekends and on public holidays were free from the scheme. CNG vehicles, electric cars, two-wheelers and cars driven by women were also exempted from the scheme. Vehicles for medical emergencies, occupied or driven by people with disabilities were also allowed to run on all day.
The Minister also decided DTC to “chalk out an action plan for procurement of buses/conductors and submit the same within seven days”.
This scheme was implemented on January 1, 2016 to cure the Delhi’s poor air condition. The second phase of this scheme was rolled out on April 15 that year. Rs. 2,000 fines were also charged by the violators of this scheme.
