A Political party is a group of persons configured to acquire and exercise political powers. The term ’party’ has come up since it was applied to all organized groups seeking political power, either by democratic elections or by revolution. Political parties enable people to participate in elections and other processes of government, educate and facilitate them to make policy choices. In our capital state there are various successful political parties in Delhi that every Delhiite should know about.

1) Bharatiya Janata Party: BJP is a pro-Hindu political party formed at the time of post-independence India. Bharatiya Janata party had enjoyed wide support among members of the higher castes mostly from northern India. The party has attempted to attract support from lower castes society as well when we talk about BJP, particularly through the appointment of several lower-caste members to prominent party positions.

2) Indian National Congress: India’s oldest political party, INC was founded on December 28 in 1885. The party was formulation of members of elite class such as Allan Octavian Hume, a prominent member of the Theosophical Society, Dadabhai Naoroji and Dinshaw Wacha. Congress party is the oldest and best ruling party in free India. The party has led the central government for 49 years.

3) Bahujan Samaj Party: BSP is Undoubtedly the third largest national political party in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It was formed majorly to represent Bahujans known as “People in minority”, referring to people from lower castes like SC, ST and OBC, along with the religious minorities that together consists 85% of India’s population.

5) Aam Admi Party: “Our aim in entering the Indian politics is not to gain and acquire power; rather we have come to change the current corrupt situation and self-serving system of politics of India forever” – says the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) website. This Indian political party which was formally launched on 26 November 2012, is a currently ruling party of NCT of Delhi.
