In support of the ‘Rape Roko’ campaign, DCW’s boys strutted down the streets of Delhi on Tuesday wearing their boxers to illustrate the idea that clothes do not cause rape but a sick mentality does. The rape roko campaign was launched by The Delhi Commission of Women in January, following the brutal rape of an 8-month-old baby.
- Volunteers started their march at Mandi House and walked till Central Park 1, holding placards and cardboards that challenged the iniquitously conceptualized idea that the length of a skirt or cut of a blouse is a reason for the increase in the number of rape cases. The campaign gained strong support from all the quarters, especially from the Indian Medical Association and the district court bar associations in Delhi.
- Volunteers raised their voice showing concern via captions such as “Her clothes are not short, your mentality is” and “What clothes was the eight-month-old baby wearing?”
- The protesters expressed their anger against the quietude of society and government on rapes and besought people to join the movement and form a peaceful human chain in Connaught Place in support of campaign.
In a letter to DCW chief, Swati Maliwal the IMA said, “We strongly support the people’s movement ‘Rape Roko’ launched by DCW chief to demand a robust criminal justice system which ensures cases of sexual crimes against women and children are tried by fast-track courts within six months and rapists of children are essentially accorded death penalty as a strong deterrent for others against such crimes”.
volunteers demanded strong action against rapists and completion of trials in case of sexual assault within six months and requested more people to join in.
